He went from the life of the land as a child on a dairy farm to the life of the office, the cubicle and the computer. Because these did not suit him, he sought to find a different way of living in which he could feel the satisfaction of living at his own pace, outside of the constraints of bosses and time schedules.
For him, the way forward to freedom was to become a creative professional. He made a career as a cartoonist, writer and poet. The ideal of the 'freelancer' who comes and goes as he pleases, selling his work in order to pay the price of living in the world, while reserving the right to step away, became his ideal.
